THE ONLY jazz club in Philly. Last night, 16 men issued a symphonic cavalcade that swelled the walls of Chris' Jazz Cafe and bore deep into the souls of anyone within a ear shot of 15th and Sanso...m. Yes, it was something! It was powerful, spontaneous and bombastic! "Walkin' Easy Now" was our declaration and "Where is the Band" became our interrogation. Nearly 12 hours later, I find myself still plagued by this query. Todd Evans asked it. Orrin Evans beckoned it. WE, the Captain Black Big Band pleaded for a answer to last night's haunting refrain..."Where is the Band!?" I dare say, this question is more apropros to earlier events of yesterday. For two years, Orrin, Anwar and Jon Michel have been hosting a jam session at World Cafe Live. There were Mondays when the house was FULL. And, there were Mondays when the house was quite empty(save for the two front tables reserved by CHOP). And now, as I write, I am down right pissed that this session has come to an end. In my frustration, I find myself asking, "Where is the BAND, Where is the BAND, WHERE is the BAND!?" We musicians here in Philly have a uncanny ability to complain about things that we can solve ourselves. Though the fruits of our endeavors toward a solution are not immediate, we can still put in the collective work to make sure that all that we do is still relevant. That having been said, as I look back on the past two years, I can honestly say that the session at WCL was plagued by familiarity. Though the music was always happening, the cast of characters were always the same. WHERE WERE YOU!? "Where was the BAND!?" Yes I know we all have things to do. Yes I know we all have other gigs. But, in a space in time where we as jazz musicians are fighting for relevance and the ears of all those who can listen, I dare say we have gotten lazy and complacent. This by no means is a condemnation, but an invitation to do better. We've got to, got to got to, show up! We sit here "statusin" and "posting" on facebook about the mundane and slightly important, yet when its time to show up, we're left wondering "Where is the Band." Some may ask, what gives me the right to say anything. I probably should keep most of this to myself. Somebody juuuuust might get alittle annoyed by all that I've said here. To be honest, I could care less. Its time to put on our big boy drawls and "swang for the fences!" Orrin's session doesn't have to die. The session at the Little Bar can thrive! The work that Matt Feldman is doing can become the gold standard. All this is possible, if the answer to "Where is the Band" is "RIGHT F%CKIN HERE!" If you find what I said to be true, please repost this. If you are offended by what I have said, then feel free to hate on me, repost it so your friend and family can do the same. But, if you do anything, I ask that if you are able, join me next Monday at 5pm I'll be at WCL. I'll have my saxophone in hand ready to play. Let's prove Orrin, Anwar and Jon Michel wrong.
