They were predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 as a consequence of his General Theory of Relativity and first directly detected by the LIGO observatory in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3>General Physics of Gravitational Waves<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nature<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Gravitational waves are disturbances in spacetime that propagate outward from their source.<\/li>\n<li>They stretch and compress space in perpendicular directions to their travel path, alternating between two polarization states (called &#8220;+&#8221; and &#8220;\u00d7&#8221; polarizations).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generation<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Produced by non-spherical, asymmetric accelerations of mass, such as two orbiting massive bodies.<\/li>\n<li>Only the most violent astrophysical events (e.g., supernovae, binary black hole mergers) generate detectable gravitational waves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy Transport<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Gravitational waves carry energy away from their source, leading to observable effects like the gradual decay of binary systems&#8217; orbits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detection<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>They are detected indirectly through their effect on spacetime, causing minuscule changes in distances between objects (on the scale of 1\/10,000th of a proton\u2019s diameter).<\/li>\n<li>Observatories like LIGO and Virgo use highly sensitive laser interferometers to detect these minuscule changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Do Gravitational Waves Travel at the Speed of Light?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, gravitational waves travel at the <strong>speed of light in a vacuum (c)<\/strong>, approximately <span class=\"katex\"><span class=\"katex-mathml\">299,792\u2009km\/s299,792 \\, \\text{km\/s}<\/span><span class=\"katex-html\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><span class=\"base\"><span class=\"mord\">299<\/span><span class=\"mpunct\">,<\/span><span class=\"mord\">792<\/span><span class=\"mord text\"><span class=\"mord\">km\/s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. This is consistent with Einstein&#8217;s General Relativity, which states that changes in the gravitational field propagate at the same speed as electromagnetic waves.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence supporting this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories detected gravitational waves from a neutron star merger (GW170817). Simultaneously, telescopes observed electromagnetic signals (gamma rays) from the same event.
