In the ’60s, as many Americans were searching for enlightenment, the city was seen as a panacea for the ills of Western culture. A remote and exotic location, it was also seen as the ultimate getaway, which is how Seger used it in this song.

Bob Seger took a humorous tone, singing about his desire to disappear for a while after dealing with constant touring and record company politics. For him, Kathmandu is used to represent a place far away where no one will bother you.

E A E
                     A
I think I'm goin' to Katmandu
       A7 E7 E
That s really, really where I'm goin' to
              B7
If I ever get out of here
                    E
That what I'm gonna do

E7 A
K-k-k-k-k-k-katmandu
             A7 E7 E
I think it's really where I'm goin' to
              B7
If I ever get out of here
                   E
I'm goin' to Katmandu

                          A
I got no kick against the West Coast
                         E
Warner Brothers are such good hosts
                              B7
I raise my whiskey glass, and give 'em a toast
                        E
I'm sure they know it's true

                     A
I got no rap against southern states
                        E
Every time I've been there it's been great
                          B7
But now I'm leaving and I can't be late
                 E
And to myself be true

                        A
That's why I'm goin' to Katmandu
          A7 E7 E
Up to the mountains where I'm goin' to
                   B7
Hey, if I ever get out of here
                    E
That what I'm gonna do

E7 A
K-k-k-k-k-k-katmandu
             A7 E7 E
It's really, really where I'm goin' to
              B7
If I ever get out of here
                   E
I'm goin' to Katmandu
                          A
I got no quarrel with the Midwest
                               E
The folks out there have given me their best
                                   B7
I've lived there all my life, I've been their guest
                      E
I sure have loved it, too

                            A
I'm tired of looking at the TV news
                              E
I'm tired of driving hard and payin' dues
                      B7
I figure, baby, I got nothin' to lose
                   E
I'm tired of being blue

                        A
That s why I'm goin' to Katmandu
          A7 E7 E
Up to the mountains where I'm goin' to
                   B7
Hey, if I ever get out of here
                    E
That what I'm gonna do

E7 A
K-k-k-k-k-k-katmandu
              A7 E7 E
Take me baby, cause I m going with you
              B7
If I ever get out of here
                   E
I'm goin' to Katmandu

break

                                A
I ain't got nothin' 'gainst the East Coast
                                E
You want some people, well they got the most
                       B7
New York City's like a friendly old ghost
                       E
You seem to pass right through

                          A
I know I'm gonna miss the USA
                           E
I guess I'll miss it every single day
                         B7
But no one loves me here any way
                   E
I know my plane is due

                        A
The one that s going to Katmandu
          A7 E7 E
Up to the mountains where I'm goin' to
                   B7
Hey, if I ever get out of here

                   E
That what I'm gonna do

E7 A
K-k-k-k-k-k-katmandu
        A7 E7 E
really, really goin' to
              B7
if I ever get out of here
B
if I ever get out of here
              C7 B7
if I ever get out of here
                   E E A E
I'm goin' to Katmandu

ABOUT THE SONG
Daniel — Vocals, Guitar

From the album First Puddle From the Sun
by Daniel Brouse

Katmandu.mp3 Katmandu Alt.
