While these thresholds have historically been rare outside the tropics, <strong data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"394\">parts of the U.S. are have breached this limit<\/strong> \u2014 something that used to be considered virtually impossible in the U.S. climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"654\">Here are the <strong data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"519\">U.S. regions most at risk<\/strong> and already showing <strong data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"580\">wet-bulb temperatures exceeding 31\u00b0C<\/strong> or very close \u2014 often <strong data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"653\">2\u20133 standard deviations above historical norms<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"738\">\u00a01. <strong data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"738\">South Texas &amp; Gulf Coast (Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"739\" data-end=\"1101\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"739\" data-end=\"860\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"860\"><strong data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"790\">Already observed wet-bulb temperatures &gt; 31\u00b0C<\/strong>, especially during <strong data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"842\">heatwaves with high humidity<\/strong> and stagnant air.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"977\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"977\">This region is <strong data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"921\">closest in climate to subtropical zones<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"928\" data-end=\"950\">high Gulf moisture<\/strong> and intense solar heating.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1101\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1101\"><strong data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"997\">Notable Event<\/strong>: July 2023 saw Brownsville record a wet-bulb of <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1056\">31.2\u00b0C<\/strong>, nearing <strong data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1100\">human survivability thresholds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1162\">2. <strong data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1162\">Louisiana, Mississippi &amp; Coastal Alabama<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1480\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1264\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1264\">High humidity from the Gulf + high temps create <strong data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1263\">perfect storm conditions for wet-bulb extremes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1369\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1369\">New Orleans and Baton Rouge have clocked <strong data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1350\">wet-bulb temps around 30.5\u00b0C to 31.0\u00b0C<\/strong> in recent summers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1370\" data-end=\"1480\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1372\" data-end=\"1480\"><strong data-start=\"1372\" data-end=\"1381\">Trend<\/strong>: Average summer humidity and nighttime minimum temps have increased significantly since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1558\">3. <strong data-start=\"1497\" data-end=\"1558\">Florida (Miami, Tampa, Fort Myers, and inland Everglades)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1830\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1690\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1690\"><strong data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1592\">Very high baseline humidity<\/strong> and increasing urban heat island effects are pushing <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1689\">wet-bulb temps near critical thresholds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1830\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1830\">Miami-Dade\u2019s urban core can hit <strong data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1744\">30.5\u00b0C wet-bulb<\/strong>, with some inland areas (Everglades edge) hitting <strong data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"1803\">31\u00b0C<\/strong> under stagnant conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1906\">4. <strong data-start=\"1847\" data-end=\"1906\">Mississippi River Valley &amp; Midwest (in isolated events)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"2159\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"2039\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"2039\">While not traditionally at risk, <strong data-start=\"1942\" data-end=\"1962\">heat dome events<\/strong> have caused spikes in <strong data-start=\"1985\" data-end=\"2038\">wet-bulb readings in Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2159\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2042\" data-end=\"2159\">Wet-bulbs of <strong data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2072\">29.5\u00b0C\u201330.5\u00b0C<\/strong> were observed during July 2023 under extreme dew points (~80\u00b0F) and triple-digit heat.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2259\">5. <strong data-start=\"2176\" data-end=\"2259\">Southwest Deserts (Phoenix, Las Vegas, Death Valley) \u2014 <em data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2257\">Dry Heat, but Changing<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2523\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2352\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2352\">Typically hot but dry, these regions have <strong data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2338\">avoided extreme wet-bulb temps<\/strong> historically.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2523\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2523\">However, <strong data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2405\">monsoonal moisture and climate shifts<\/strong> are making <strong data-start=\"2417\" data-end=\"2441\">30\u00b0C+ wet-bulb temps<\/strong> more common \u2014 especially during <strong data-start=\"2474\" data-end=\"2497\">nighttime heatwaves<\/strong> when humidity is trapped.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>URGENT CLIMATE WARNING<\/b><br \/>\nOur latest <a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/Chaos-Theory-and-Climate-Change.html\"><b>climate model<\/b><\/a> &#8212; now incorporating complex social-ecological feedback loops within a dynamic, non-linear system &#8212; projects that global temperatures could rise by up to 9\u00b0C (16.2\u00b0F) within this century. This far exceeds earlier estimates, which predicted a 4\u00b0C rise over the next thousand years, and signals a dramatic acceleration of warming. <\/p>\n<p>At this level of heating, large regions of the planet will become uninhabitable due to extreme heat, sea level rise, agricultural collapse, and mass migration.
