Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"178\" data-end=\"237\"><strong data-start=\"186\" data-end=\"237\">1. Direct Emissions Increases (CO\u2082 and Methane)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"384\">Despite global pledges to cut emissions, the U.S. has become the <strong data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"343\">world\u2019s largest oil and gas producer<\/strong>\u2014with record output in <strong data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"383\">2023 and 2024<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"386\" data-end=\"569\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"386\" data-end=\"473\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"473\"><strong data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"406\">Oil production<\/strong> hit an all-time high in 2023 at over <strong data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"470\">13 million barrels\/day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"474\" data-end=\"569\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"569\"><strong data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"502\">Natural gas production<\/strong> and exports of <strong data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"549\">liquefied natural gas (LNG)<\/strong> also hit records.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"676\">These fossil fuels are either <strong data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"624\">burned domestically<\/strong> or exported and burned elsewhere. Either way, they:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"873\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"732\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"732\">Emit <strong data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"711\">billions of tons of CO\u2082<\/strong> into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"873\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"735\" data-end=\"873\">Leak <strong data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"751\">methane<\/strong>, a super-potent greenhouse gas (84x stronger than CO\u2082 over 20 years), especially during fracking, transport, and venting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1004\">\u00a0<em data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"887\">Result:<\/em> U.S. emissions are not declining fast enough to meet climate targets, and exported fuels make things worse globally.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1011\" data-end=\"1081\"><strong data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1081\">2. Locking In Carbon Infrastructure (Carbon Lock-In Effect)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1199\">Every new well, pipeline, refinery, and LNG terminal represents a <strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1173\">long-term investment<\/strong> in fossil infrastructure:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1257\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1257\">These systems are designed to run for <strong data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1256\">30\u201350 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1379\">They create powerful <strong data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1316\">economic and political pressure<\/strong> to keep using fossil fuels even as the climate crisis deepens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1381\" data-end=\"1488\">\u00a0<em data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1393\">Result:<\/em> This undermines the energy transition and makes it harder to meet goals like net-zero by 2050.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1543\"><strong data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1543\">3. Undercutting Clean Energy Progress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1635\">U.S. fossil fuel expansion <strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1604\">lowers global oil\/gas prices<\/strong> (at least temporarily), which:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1852\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1689\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1689\"><strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1666\">Incentivizes consumption<\/strong> instead of efficiency.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1785\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1785\">Makes <strong data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1727\">clean energy alternatives<\/strong> like solar, wind, and EVs look relatively more expensive.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1852\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1852\">Delays global decarbonization, especially in emerging economies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1957\">\u00a0<em data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1866\">Result:<\/em> U.S. production acts as a climate \u201cdrag,\u201d slowing the global shift away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2014\">4. Supercharging Climate Feedback Loops<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2043\">By enabling more emissions:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2044\" data-end=\"2290\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2044\" data-end=\"2141\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2046\" data-end=\"2141\">More <strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2067\">extreme heat<\/strong> \u2192 more <strong data-start=\"2075\" data-end=\"2095\">air conditioning<\/strong> \u2192 more electricity \u2192 more natural gas burned.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2219\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2219\">More <strong data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2161\">droughts<\/strong> \u2192 more <strong data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2182\">wildfires<\/strong> \u2192 more carbon released from forests.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2290\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2290\">More <strong data-start=\"2227\" data-end=\"2246\">Arctic ice melt<\/strong> \u2192 less sunlight reflected \u2192 faster warming.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2292\" data-end=\"2432\"><em data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2304\">Result:<\/em> U.S. fossil fuel production is not just feeding climate change\u2014it\u2019s accelerating <strong data-start=\"2386\" data-end=\"2404\">feedback loops<\/strong> that are very hard to stop.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2472\"><strong data-start=\"2446\" data-end=\"2472\">5.
