massive electrostatic discharge that occurs when static electricity built up in clouds is suddenly released, creating a powerful current through the air.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1271\">Formation Steps:<\/h3>\n<ol data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"2167\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1515\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1307\"><strong data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1296\">Charge Separation<\/strong> in Clouds:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1515\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1408\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1408\">Thunderstorms cause <strong data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1383\">collisions of ice particles and water droplets<\/strong>, which transfer
