It was born out of pure anger and frustration. I originally expected to record the song quickly and easily, but by the time I started this take, I had already gone through 34 attempts that day. (The full session ended up with 41 takes, including vocal and final versions.) I had injured my hand, and when I hit record for this one, I just said, &#8220;F**k it,&#8221; and let loose with this noise jam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"89\">Here are a few notable instances of rock-and-roll frustration literally leaving its mark:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"91\" data-end=\"1248\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"91\" data-end=\"384\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"93\" data-end=\"384\"><strong data-start=\"93\" data-end=\"106\">Tom Petty<\/strong><br data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"109\" \/>During the <em data-start=\"122\" data-end=\"140\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Southern Accents<\/em> sessions, Petty grew so exasperated with endless tweaks to the track \u201cRebels\u201d that he punched a studio wall\u2014hard enough to shatter bones and tendons in his hand and put the project on hold while he healed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"386\" data-end=\"692\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"692\"><strong data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"412\">Billie Joe Armstrong<\/strong><br data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"415\" \/>In 2012, after a string of technical glitches at Clear Channel\u2019s iHeartRadio Festival, Armstrong erupted onstage, smashing his guitar so violently that he cut himself and was ushered off for medical attention before later entering rehab.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"386\" data-end=\"692\"><strong> Kurt Cobain<\/strong> got so furious during the recording of \u201cLithium\u201d that he couldn\u2019t nail the take, he exploded in frustration and ended up creating the hidden track \u201cEndless, Nameless.\u201d Butch Vig has said that, to this day, he\u2019s never seen anyone that angry in a recording session.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"943\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"943\"><strong data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"714\">Pete Townshend<\/strong><br data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"717\" \/>The Who\u2019s signature windmill strum nearly backfired in Tacoma, WA (1989), when Townshend\u2019s whammy bar drove through his palm mid-set\u2014an accident born of his hyper-physical playing style.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"1248\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"1248\"><strong data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"961\">Keith Moon<\/strong><br data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"964\" \/>On the Who\u2019s U.S. TV debut on <em data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1031\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour<\/em> (1967), Moon rigged his bass drum with explosives.
