The particles are tightly packed and vibrate in place.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"155\" data-end=\"182\">\n<li data-start=\"155\" data-end=\"182\">\n<p data-start=\"157\" data-end=\"182\">Example: Ice, rock, wood.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"184\" data-end=\"357\">\n<p data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"322\"><strong data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"197\">Liquid<\/strong> \u2013 Has a fixed volume but takes the shape of its container. The particles are close together but can move past one another.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"357\">\n<li data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"357\">\n<p data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"357\">Example: Water, oil, alcohol.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"502\">\n<p data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"456\"><strong data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"369\">Gas<\/strong> \u2013 Has neither a fixed shape nor volume. The particles are far apart and move freely.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"502\">\n<li data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"502\">\n<p data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"502\">Example: Oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"548\">But there are <strong data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"530\">more<\/strong> states of matter:<\/h3>\n<ol start=\"4\" data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"981\">\n<li data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"655\">\n<p data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"655\"><strong data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"563\">Plasma<\/strong> \u2013 An ionized gas with free electrons and ions.
