ground like the Indians did to hear buffalo running&#8230; or to a railroad track to hear a far off train?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"175\">Great question \u2014 the science behind these phenomena all centers on <strong data-start=\"67\" data-end=\"96\">low-frequency sound waves<\/strong> and how they <strong data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"146\">travel through different mediums<\/strong>, like air, ground, or metal.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"182\" data-end=\"217\">1. <strong data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"217\">Elephants and Infrasound<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"218\" data-end=\"336\">Elephants communicate using <strong data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"260\">infrasound<\/strong> \u2014 sound waves <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"290\">below 20 Hz<\/strong>, which is beneath the range of human hearing.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"895\">\n<li data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"623\">\n<p data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"359\"><strong data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"359\">Why infrasound?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"623\">\n<li data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"510\">\n<p data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"510\"><strong data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"384\">Long wavelengths<\/strong> of low-frequency sounds travel <strong data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"454\">further through the ground and air<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"480\">less energy loss<\/strong> than higher-frequency sounds.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"623\">\n<p data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"623\">Elephants can send and receive these deep rumbles over <strong data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"597\">distances of 5\u201310 miles<\/strong>, even through the ground.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"895\">\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"658\"><strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"658\">How do elephants detect it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"895\">\n<li data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"754\">\n<p data-start=\"663\" data-end=\"754\">Through their <strong data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"691\">large ears<\/strong>, but also through are sensed by <strong data-start=\"784\" data-end=\"807\">Pacinian corpuscles<\/strong> \u2014 special receptors in their feet \u2014 and then transmitted up the bones to the inner
