A SCIENCE NOTE: Albedo Feedback and Ice Melt
\nAs ice melts, darker surfaces are exposed, absorbing more heat and causing further melt. Sea ice melt increases ocean heat but does not directly raise sea levels, whereas land ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica not only raises sea levels but alters ocean salinity and temperature, destabilizing the AMOC.<\/p>\n

Greenland and Antarctica contain “corks” holding vast meltwater reservoirs. Once these corks break, sudden sea level pulses of 1-3 feet per year for multiple years could occur, with unpredictable impacts on the AMOC and global climate systems.<\/p>\n

*<\/b> Our climate model<\/b><\/a> \u2014 incorporating complex social-ecological feedback loops within a dynamic, non-linear system \u2014 projects that global temperatures could rise by up to 9\u00b0C (16.2\u00b0F) within this century. This far exceeds earlier estimates, which predicted a 4\u00b0C rise over the next thousand years, and signals a dramatic acceleration of warming.<\/p>\n
