Its earliest spark came from the paper <em data-start=\"1753\" data-end=\"1838\">Antarctica, Inevitable Sea-Level Rise, and the Cascading Impacts of Climate Change.<\/em> Writing scientifically about extinction demands clinical phrasing like:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"2011\"><em data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"2011\">\u201cWildlife Collapse: Emperor penguins and other species face extinction as their habitats vanish.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2218\">But music lets me tell the truth emotionally \u2014 without filters, without footnotes.<br data-start=\"2095\" data-end=\"2098\" \/>\u201cPenguin\u201d became the place where I could finally let the pain through, turning the cold statistics into something human.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"202\" data-end=\"390\">Heartbreakingly, a new report shows the crisis extends far beyond Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"602\">A newly published study has revealed that <strong data-start=\"434\" data-end=\"517\">African penguins off the coast of South Africa likely starved to death en masse<\/strong> after a catastrophic collapse of their primary food sources, sardines and anchovies.<\/p>\n<div data-subtree=\"aimfl\" data-complete=\"true\" data-processed=\"true\">The specific species of penguin that starved to death en masse off the coast of South Africa is the<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"602\"><mark class=\"HxTRcb\" data-complete=\"true\" data-sae=\"\"><strong class=\"Yjhzub\" data-complete=\"true\">African penguin<\/strong> (<em class=\"eujQNb\" data-complete=\"true\">Spheniscus demersus<\/em>)<\/mark>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Y3BBE\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" data-hveid=\"CAEIAhAA\" data-processed=\"true\" data-complete=\"true\">This species is the only penguin native to the African continent and is now classified as &#8220;Critically Endangered&#8221; by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"604\" data-end=\"796\">The findings \u2014 from the University of Exeter and South Africa\u2019s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, published in <em data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"777\">Ostrich: Journal of African Ornithology<\/em> \u2014 are devastating:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"1167\">\n<li data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"892\">\n<p data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"892\"><strong data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"820\">Mass Starvation:<\/strong> An estimated <strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"862\">62,000 breeding penguins<\/strong> died between 2004 and 2011.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"1024\">\n<p data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"1024\"><strong data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"915\">Colony Collapse:<\/strong> On Dassen Island and Robben Island, <strong data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"1022\">95% of the penguins breeding in 2004 were gone within eight years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1167\">\n<p data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1167\"><strong data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1046\">Species Status:<\/strong> African penguins are now <strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1097\">Critically Endangered<\/strong>, with a global population decline of nearly <strong data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1167\">80% in just 30 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1193\"><strong data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1193\">Why did this happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1214\">Two driving forces:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1580\">\n<li data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1336\">\n<p data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1336\"><strong data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1245\">Commercial Overfishing<\/strong> \u2014 Sardine and anchovy exploitation reached nearly <strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1303\">80%<\/strong>, stripping the ecosystem bare.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1580\">\n<p data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1580\"><strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1358\">Climate Change<\/strong> \u2014 Warming oceans and shifting salinity patterns have pushed the remaining fish far from traditional penguin foraging zones. Penguins can\u2019t travel more than ~40 km from their nests to hunt. When the fish move, they starve.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1623\">So today, I\u2019m writing and recording <strong data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1623\">\u201cAfrican Penguin.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2327\">If the song moves even one person to care, to act, to push for change, then maybe it can make a difference.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2389\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2389\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Please \u2014 before it\u2019s too late \u2014 stop climate change now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>URGENT CLIMATE WARNING<\/strong><br \/>\nOur <a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/Chaos-Theory-and-Climate-Change.html\"><b>climate model<\/b><\/a> \u2014 incorporating complex social-ecological feedback loops within a dynamic, nonlinear system \u2014 projects that global temperatures could rise by up to <strong data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"971\">9\u00b0C (16.2\u00b0F)<\/strong>. This far exceeds earlier projections, which estimated a 4\u00b0C rise over the next thousand years, and signals a dramatic acceleration of planetary warming. We are entering a phase of <strong>compound, cascading collapse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At this level of heating, many regions will become uninhabitable due to heat stress, sea-level rise, food system failure, and forced migration. <a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/Cracked-Fractals-Deviations.html#wet-bulb\">Wet-bulb temperatures in the U.S. are already nearing 31\u00b0C (87.8\u00b0F)<\/a> &#8212; a physiological limit beyond which human life cannot be sustained outdoors for long, even with water and shade.<\/p>\n<p>This is not hypothetical. The climate system is tipping now.<\/p>\n<h3 align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/Tipping-Points.html\">Tipping points<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/notes\/feedback-loops.html\">feedback loops<\/a> drive the <a href=\"http:\/\/membrane.com\/global_warming\/Climate-Change-Acceleration-Rate.html\">acceleration of climate change<\/a>.
