ABOUT THE SCIENCE
\nRare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 specific metallic elements that possess unique magnetic, optical, and catalytic properties essential for modern technology, found in everything from smartphones and electric vehicles to defense systems and medical equipment.<\/p>\n

The group consists of the 15 lanthanides (elements 57 to 71 on the periodic table), plus scandium and yttrium, which are included because they occur in the same geological deposits and exhibit similar chemical properties.<\/p>\n

Why They Aren’t That “Rare”
\nThe name “rare earth minerals” is largely a misnomer. In terms of overall abundance in the Earth’s crust, they are not particularly rare; some, like cerium, are more abundant than common industrial metals like copper or lead. The “rarity” stems from historical context and extraction challenges<\/p>\n
