These sound waves exist below the range of human hearing and are generated by natural geophysical events like earthquakes, volcanoes, and ocean waves, as well as by atmospheric turbulence.

Elephants use these subsonic rumbles for a sophisticated form of long-distance communication called infrasound. These rumbles occur at frequencies as low as 5 to 20 Hz, which is mostly below the range of human hearing.

How Elephants Communicate via Infrasound
Production: Elephants produce these rumbles using their massive vocal cords, which are much larger than a human’s. By manipulating their larynx, trunk, and mouth, they can modify these sounds to convey specific meanings.

Distance: Because low-frequency waves travel much farther than high-pitched ones, these rumbles can be heard by other elephants up to 10 kilometers (6 miles) away through the air. In ideal conditions, such as at night when there is less wind and noise, this range can extend even further.

Seismic Detection: These sounds also travel as seismic waves through the ground. Elephants “listen” to these vibrations through specialized fat pads in their feet and sensitive receptors called Pacinian corpuscles. This method allows them to detect signals from even greater distances—up to 32 kilometers (20 miles) away.

Common Uses of “Rumbles”
Elephants have a complex “vocabulary” of rumbles for different social situations:
* Greeting Rumbles: Used when family members reunite after being apart.
* “Time to Go” Rumbles: Emitted by the matriarch to signal the herd to move to a new location.
* Contact Calls: Soft rumbles used to locate family members who have wandered off.
* Mating Calls: Bulls and cows use specific rumbles to find each other across vast distances when it is time to breed.
* Warning Signals: They can signal danger, such as approaching predators or humans, causing distant herds to bunch together for protection.
* Environmental Awareness: Elephants can even sense the infrasonic rumbles of distant thunderstorms, allowing them to track and move toward rain hundreds of kilometers away.

From the album “Rumble“

[Silence] [Instrumental, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Synth, Bass, Percussion, Drums] [Intro – Whispered] Feel the beat (Be complete) [Instrumental Intro: Pulsing Bass, Organ Swell, Muted Guitar Chops, Rising Synth Filter] [Minimal Beat, Sub Bass, Spoken Vocal] Did you hear the elephant say (Come on!
