bookmark_borderA Shiny Apple Glistened

[Intro]
Once (upon a time)
in a world void of reason (and rhyme)

[Verse]
Once upon a time, in a world of green and gold,
A Sleeping Beauty lay, her story yet untold,
Beneath the shade of forests, by rivers that would run,
Dreaming of a future under a shining sun.

But somewhere in the distance, a shadow starts to creep,
A shiny apple glistens, as she drifts into her sleep,
Tempted by its shimmer, by the promise that it holds,
Not knowing that the danger lies within its mold.

[Chorus]
Oh, Sleeping Beauty, wake from your dreams,
The world is burning, tearing at the seams,
A shiny apple, tempting and bright,
But its sweetness hides the darkest of nights.

[Verse 2]
The seasons start to change, the ice begins to melt,
The forests lose their color, the rains sting and pelt,
The apple’s getting brighter, but with every single bite,
The poison flows much deeper, stealing all the light.

Now the rivers run with sorrow, the skies are painted gray,
The birds have stopped their singing, the flowers fade away,
But Sleeping Beauty slumbers, her eyes remain closed tight,
Unaware the apple’s poisoned everything in sight.

[Chorus]
Oh, Sleeping Beauty, wake from your dreams,
The world is burning, tearing at the seams,
A shiny apple, tempting and bright,
But its sweetness hides the darkest of nights.

[Bridge]
It’s time to wake up, break the spell,
Rise from the ashes where we fell,
We’ve tasted too much, believed the lies,
Now the answer’s before our eyes.

[Outro]
Once upon a time, in a world of green and blue,
A Sleeping Beauty wakes, and we begin anew.

A SCIENCE NOTE
NOAA — Wildfires are an increasing threat to air quality, affecting nearby areas and regions far downwind due to smoke dispersion. A new study published in Environmental Science & Technology examined how wildfire smoke affects the levels of two harmful pollutants, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone, across the United States from 2018 to 2023. Through an analysis of 600 air monitoring stations and satellite observations, researchers found that wildfire smoke significantly raised PM2.5 and ozone levels, leading to numerous days when air pollution exceeded health standards. Notably, wildfire smoke accounted for 25 percent of all days with unhealthy ozone levels, with 2023 seeing the greatest impact due to severe wildfires in Canada.

BROUSE — A study published in the Journal Nature found Canada’s 2023 wildfires released more carbon into the atmosphere than the annual emissions of all but three countries, underscoring a troubling trend. A new study raises serious concerns that Canada’s forests, long considered crucial carbon sinks, may no longer reliably absorb carbon in the long term.

This signals a dangerous acceleration of global warming, pushing us over a tipping point. Permafrost, once thought to be a stable, frozen barrier, is now thawing and burning year-round, releasing even more carbon and methane into the atmosphere. The resulting domino effect exacerbates climate instability, leading to more extreme weather, rising sea levels, and declining air quality.

These human-driven changes are not just ecological crises — they pose direct threats to human health, increasing the likelihood of premature death due to heatwaves, pollution, and the cascading impacts of an increasingly volatile climate.

The Study: Carbon emissions from the 2023 Canadian wildfires

About Feedback Loops and Tipping Points

Tipping cascades have emerged between biogeophysical and social-ecological systems. This Domino Effect is causing climate change to accelerate at an exponential rate.

Tipping points are Critical Milestones that directly impact the rate of acceleration in climate change by multiplying the number and intensity of feedback loops. Identifying and understanding these tipping points is crucial for climate science and policymaking. Crossing multiple tipping points could lead to a domino effect, resulting in a much more rapid and severe climate change than currently projected.

A SCIENCE NOTE
The winter of 2023 was marked by nearly weekly atmospheric river events that triggered flash flooding. On January 9, the Greater Philadelphia Region experienced an unprecedented winter tropical rainstorm. CBS News reported, ‘If it feels like it’s been an abnormally rainy few weeks, you’re right. Normal rainfall totals between Dec. 1 and Jan. 9 amount to about 4.78 inches. Between December 2023 and Tuesday, we’d already recorded more than 9 inches of rain, an amount normally seen over the span of December, January, and February combined.’ The January 9 storm alone brought over 4 inches of rain to many areas, pushing the Delaware River to its highest level on record. The storm was accompanied by hurricane-force winds, with gusts exceeding 70 mph.

Winters in North America are warming, and with warmer air holding more moisture, we are seeing more extreme rain events instead of snow. This shift results in catastrophic flooding and other damage. Currently, violent rain is causing some of the most severe climate change impacts on Earth. Unfortunately, that’s the reality. The root of the problem lies with us — the people. Government officials simply reflect our choices. Until consumer demands become more socially responsible, we’ll continue to get exactly what we want — and deserve. Each person bears the responsibility to minimize pollution, discontinue the use of fossil fuels, reduce consumption, and foster a culture of love and care. Only then can we drive the collective action needed to address the climate crisis and build a sustainable future.

A SCIENCE NOTE
Our climate model utilizes chaos theory in an attempt to adequately account for humans and forecasts a global average temperature increase of 9℃ above pre-industrial levels. The Butterfly Effect illustrates that a small change in one area can lead to significant alterations in conditions anywhere on the globe. Hence, the frequently heard statement that a fluttering butterfly in China can cause a hurricane in the Atlantic. Be a butterfly and affect the world.

The government’s actions, or lack thereof, represent their constituents’ hate and ignorance, leading to a situation where “worst-case” predictions for climate change have become the “best-case” expectations. The ramifications of these decisions are dire, prompting a revision of climate models to reflect a much grimmer outlook. The new projections indicate a potential maximum global temperature increase of 9°C within this century, a stark rise from the previously estimated 4°C over the next millennium.

What Can I Do? There are plenty of things you can do to help save the planet: stop using fossil fuels, consume less, and love more.

Love has the transformative power to save the world in numerous ways:

  1. Fostering Connection and Unity: Love brings people together, transcending boundaries of race, religion, nationality, and ideology. By fostering a sense of empathy, compassion, and understanding, love promotes unity and solidarity among diverse individuals and communities. When people come together in love, they can work collaboratively to address shared challenges and create positive change on a global scale.
  2. Promoting Peace and Harmony: Love is the antidote to hatred, conflict, and violence. By promoting forgiveness, reconciliation, and mutual respect, love can help heal deep-seated divisions and promote peace and harmony within and between societies. When individuals and nations choose love over fear and hostility, they pave the way for peaceful coexistence and cooperation.
  3. Inspiring Empathy and Altruism: Love cultivates a sense of empathy and concern for the well-being of others. When individuals act out of love, they are motivated to alleviate suffering, promote justice, and advance the common good. Love inspires acts of kindness, generosity, and selflessness, creating a ripple effect of positive change that spreads throughout communities and across borders.
  4. Protecting the Environment: Love for the natural world motivates individuals to protect and preserve the planet for future generations. When people recognize their interconnectedness with all living beings and the delicate balance of ecosystems, they are inspired to adopt sustainable lifestyles, promote conservation efforts, and advocate for environmental stewardship. Love for the Earth compels us to take action to address climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure a healthy and sustainable future for all.
  5. Empowering Social Justice: Love is inherently egalitarian, valuing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. When people act out of love, they are committed to promoting social justice, equality, and human rights for all. Love drives efforts to dismantle systems of oppression, combat discrimination, and create inclusive societies where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. By standing up for justice and advocating for marginalized communities, love can help create a more just and equitable world for future generations.

What you can do today. How to save the planet.

Tipping points are Critical Milestones that directly impact the rate of acceleration in climate change by multiplying the number and intensity of feedback loops. Identifying and understanding these tipping points is crucial for climate science and policymaking. Crossing multiple tipping points has led to the domino effect, resulting in a much more rapid and severe climate change than currently projected.

Push a glass toward the edge of a table and eventually it will fall off on its own. No matter how slowly or meticulously you push… no matter how you weight or fill the glass, it will reach a tipping point and fall off before being pushed completely off the table. No matter whether you believe the glass is half-empty or half-full, when the tipping point is reached it will plummet out-of-control to its end. This is science not fate, faith, nor belief. Human induced climate change has resulted in environmental tipping points being breached.

Tipping points, when crossed, trigger self-sustaining feedback loops that are no longer dependent on human activity. Similar to when a domino topples over hitting two more dominoes that in turn fall hitting more dominoes. Thus, the name The Domino Effect. It can also be visualized as The Snowball Effect. A tipping point is like a snowball rolling down a hill growing in mass and velocity (momentum). When a tipping point is crossed, it results in cumulative and reinforced global warming.

9 Climate Change Tipping Points Crossed
At least nine tipping points have been crossed. The first dominoes have fallen and will continue to knock down more tiles with each escalating step. The crossing of these nine climate tipping points represents a critical threshold in the Earth’s climate system, with potentially irreversible consequences for global ecosystems and human societies.

A SCIENCE NOTE
As an economist, I have spent my career studying risk management, and in the process, I have also become a climate scientist — because climate change is the greatest risk to humanity. Climate science is closely tied to our emotions, particularly hate and love. The hatred of scientists and intelligence is one of the most significant factors contributing to the potential demise of modern civilization. If you’re over 8 years old, you should NOT be reposting memes. Most memes are generated by foreign actors (e.g., Russia) attempting to sow division through hate. Memes that promote class warfare, advocate taxing the rich, reference corporate greed or the economy, criticize philanthropy, demonize immigrants, undermine climate science, or promote “drill, baby, drill” are prime examples. If you’re under 8 years old, you shouldn’t be on social media at all. STOP REPOSTING HATEFUL MEMES.

The solution lies in increased education and LOVE.

From a paper I coauthored: The government’s actions, or lack thereof, represent their constituents’ hate and ignorance, leading to a situation where “worst-case” predictions for climate change have become the “best-case” expectations. The ramifications of these decisions are dire, prompting a revision of climate models to reflect a much grimmer outlook. The new projections indicate a potential maximum global temperature increase of 9°C within this century, a stark rise from the previously estimated 4°C over the next millennium.

A SCIENCE NOTE

Several feedback loops involve brown carbon, lightning, wildfires, arctic warming, ice melt, and permafrost collapse. Brown carbon, with a low albedo, absorbs more heat, releasing sequestered carbon and methane into the atmosphere, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.

Studies have identified a feedback loop between lightning and forest fires. Global warming increases extreme weather events, conducive to lightning. More lightning ignites trees and soil, releasing warming CO2, creating more storms and lightning. The Forests at Risk Due to Lightning Fires study reveals the sensitivity of intact forests to potential increases in lightning fires, impacting terrestrial carbon storage and biodiversity.

“What many people may not be aware of is that lightning is the most common ignition source for fires in remote temperate and boreal forests,” says Thomas Janssen, research associate at VU Amsterdam. These forests store large amounts of carbon, which is released in the form of greenhouse gases during the fire. The research reveals that 77% of the burned area in intact forest regions outside the tropics is due to lightning fires, and the number of strikes is expected to increase by 11 to 3 % per degree warming with ongoing climate change.

“When a thunderstorm passes through this landscape, there are thousands of lightning strikes, and some hundreds of them start little fires,” said Prof Sander Veraverbeke from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, one of the authors on the research paper. “And these can grow together into mega-fire complexes that become the size of small countries. Once these fires are so big, it becomes very difficult to do anything about them.”

More wildfires create more CO2 and more brown carbon that result in more global warming that results in more lightning strikes creating more wildfires resulting in more global warming thawing more permafrost allowing more emissions of CO2 and methane resulting in more warming, creating many more feedback loops.
