[Intro]
(Oh, please)
2,912 degrees
Tell me that’s not
Too hot

[Verse 1]
Too hot to touch
Too hot by so much
Guess we’re going to learn
How it feels to burn

[Chorus]
(Oh, please)
2,912 degrees
Tell me that’s not
Too hot

[Bridge]
The temperature getting blue
(So, am I… how about you)
They told us… tried to warn
(We’re all gonna burn)

[Verse 2]
The color of the hottest flame
The condition of Earth the same
Going to the hottest place
Well beyond the human race

[Chorus]
(Oh, please)
2,912 degrees
Tell me that’s not
Too hot

[Bridge]
The temperature getting blue
(So, am I… how about you)
They told us… tried to warn
(We’re all gonna burn)

[Chorus]
(Oh, please)
2,912 degrees
Tell me that’s not
Too hot

[Outro]
The temperature getting blue
(So, am I… how about you?)

A SCIENCE NOTE
A blue flame typically reaches temperatures between 2,552°F to 2,912°F (1,400°C to 1,600°C), considered the hottest flame color due to efficient combustion, with the hottest part of the flame being the blue tip.

This song uses the metaphor of a blue flame—the hottest type of flame—to represent the climate crisis, illustrating the extreme and uncontrollable heat that humanity is facing due to global warming.

Verse 1:

The lines “Too hot to touch / Too hot by so much” suggest that the world has surpassed a safe temperature threshold. The phrase “Guess we’re going to learn / How it feels to burn” implies that the consequences of climate change are no longer distant warnings but an inevitable reality.

Chorus:

The repeated reference to “2,912 degrees” likely alludes to the extreme temperatures of a blue flame, symbolizing the increasing, unsustainable heat on Earth. The pleading “(Oh, please)” could represent desperation or frustration at inaction.

Bridge & Instrumentals:

The guitar and saxophone solos could symbolize chaos or the intensifying effects of climate change. The line “The temperature getting blue (So, am I… how about you)” suggests both a literal and figurative meaning—Earth heating to the point of a blue flame while people are also feeling emotionally “blue” or distressed.

The line “They told us… tried to warn (We’re all gonna burn)” directly references ignored warnings from scientists and environmentalists. The inevitability of burning could represent wildfires, heatwaves, or the broader destruction caused by unchecked climate change.

Verse 2:

The line “The color of the hottest flame / The condition of Earth the same” explicitly ties the blue flame to Earth’s worsening state. The final lines—“Going to the hottest place / Well beyond the human race”—suggest that if the crisis continues, Earth will become uninhabitable, pushing humanity toward extinction.

Overall Interpretation:

This song conveys the urgency of climate change through the symbolism of a blue flame. The increasing temperature is not just a physical phenomenon but a dire warning of irreversible damage. The repetition of “Tell me that’s not / Too hot” challenges denial or complacency, forcing listeners to confront the reality of an overheating planet.

A SCIENCE NOTE
A fairly effective way to deal with climate crisis deniers today is to state the economic facts as it pertains to their pocketbook — they are going to pay for it with higher taxes and insurance premiums.

*Homeowners insurance is currently socialized in three states
*20% of homes in high climate risk zip codes are already uninsurable
*In the next 30 years, 84% of homes will lose value due to climate change (at today’s projections)… however…

The acceleration rate under current GHG emissions is increasing at the following rapid rate:
Rising Frequency of Disasters:
1980s: The nation averaged approximately 3.3 billion-dollar disasters annually.
2014–2023: This average rose to over 17 such events per year.
2023: A record-setting 28 billion-dollar disasters occurred, surpassing the previous high of 22 events in 2020.
2024: the United States experienced 27 weather and climate disasters, each causing damages exceeding $1 billion.

Escalating Economic Damages:
1980–1999: The U.S. experienced 96 billion-dollar disasters, resulting in over $546.3 billion in total costs.
2000–2019: This number increased to 244 events, with costs exceeding $1.95 trillion—a 154% rise in the number of disasters and a 257% surge in associated costs compared to the previous two decades.
2024: Natural disasters led to $140 billion in insured losses, up from $106 billion in 2023, marking one of the costliest years on record. Total losses, including uninsured damages, reached $320 billion.
2025: A single climate disaster occurred that may result in over $320 billion in economic costs. Due to the toxicity of the affected area, the true economic impact, particularly concerning cancer and other long-term health effects, won’t be known for years. Today is February 25, 2025. There have been several other extreme events this year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has not yet released an official count of billion-dollar disasters for 2025. Their next update is scheduled for March 10, 2025. However, NOAA’s status as an entity is unknown at this time.

This upward trend in both the frequency and economic impact of billion-dollar disasters highlights the growing financial risks associated with climate change.

A SCIENCE NOTE
Unintended Consequences and Inexplicable Consumer Behavior
Climate change is primarily driven by the escalation of thermal energy affecting biogeophysical and socio-economic systems. While biogeophysical factors can be studied using math, physics, and historical records, socio-economic systems pose greater challenges due to the unpredictable consequences of human behavior and inexplicable consumer choices, exacerbating tipping points and feedback loops.

Complex Feedback Loops:

Complex feedback loops in climate science refer to interactions between different components of the Earth’s climate system that can amplify or dampen the effects of initial changes, leading to non-linear and often unpredictable outcomes. These feedback loops play a crucial role in shaping the behavior of the climate system and can influence various climate phenomena, including temperature changes, ice melt, and precipitation patterns.

Tipping points are Critical Milestones that directly impact the rate of acceleration in climate change by multiplying the number and intensity of feedback loops. Identifying and understanding these tipping points is crucial for climate science and policymaking. Crossing multiple tipping points could lead to a domino effect, resulting in a much more rapid and severe climate change than currently projected.

ABOUT THE SONG

The Persistence of Climate Change Denial: Impact and Consequences

Many people ask, “Why does a scientist engage with climate deniers?”

Thanks for the concern! You’re right that, for my mental health, it might be easier to ignore them. However, as an educator, I see these interactions as an opportunity to reach a wider audience. Engaging with climate skeptics — what some might call ‘climate dummies’ — gives me the chance to correct misinformation in real time and provide fact-based explanations to others who may be quietly observing the conversation.

By addressing these false claims head-on, I can offer a legitimate, scientifically backed source of information to those seeking clarity in a sea of misinformation. This outreach is critical, especially when so many people are exposed to conflicting or inaccurate claims about climate change. My aim is not to argue for the sake of it, but to ensure that there are trusted voices out there providing clear, evidence-based information on the urgent reality of climate change.

In addition, their opposition is immensely educative in our efforts. In reality, their persistent denial of climate change has forced us to rethink and drastically rebuild our climate models. What were once “worst-case” scenarios have now become the “best-case” outcomes we are seeing today.

Our updated climate model, now integrating complex social-ecological factors, shows that global temperatures could rise by up to 9°C within this century — far beyond previous predictions of a 4°C rise over the next thousand years. This kind of warming could bring us dangerously close to the “wet-bulb” threshold, where heat and humidity exceed the human body’s ability to cool itself, leading to fatal consequences.

Unfortunately, we rely on these so-called climate “skeptics” to remind us just how urgent and critical the climate crisis is becoming. Ironically, their denial helps highlight the importance of decisive action, as climate change continues to spiral out of control.

The window for meaningful intervention is closing, and the need for action has never been more critical.

What you can do today. How to save the planet.

A SCIENCE NOTE: A Concerning Day for Earth
Mass layoffs are poised to impact the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) imminently, according to sources familiar with the situation. These substantial reductions are expected to halve NOAA’s workforce from approximately 12,000 to 6,000 employees.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by President Donald Trump and led by Elon Musk, has been rapidly implementing cuts across various federal agencies, including NOAA. These actions have raised concerns about the potential degradation of critical services that NOAA provides.

NOAA plays a pivotal role in climate science and monitoring Earth’s habitability. The impending staff reductions and budget cuts could significantly impair the agency’s ability to deliver accurate weather forecasts, conduct essential climate research, and manage marine and coastal resources effectively.

These developments underscore the pressing need to evaluate the long-term impacts of such cuts on environmental monitoring and public safety.

A SCIENCE NOTE

Climate change is significantly impacting small mammals in North America, including species like skunks and raccoons. These effects manifest through alterations in body size, shifts in geographic distribution, and changes in population dynamics.

Body Size Reduction

Recent studies have observed a trend of decreasing body size among small mammals in response to rising temperatures. Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that over the past century, small mammals across North America have experienced reductions in body size, potentially as an adaptive response to warmer climates.

Geographic Distribution Shifts

Climate-induced habitat changes are prompting species like raccoons to expand their ranges northward. Warming temperatures facilitate raccoon migration into previously inhospitable regions, such as boreal forests, potentially disrupting existing ecosystems.

Population Dynamics and Urbanization

Some small mammals, including skunks and raccoons, exhibit high adaptability to urban environments. As climate change alters natural habitats, these species may increasingly inhabit urban areas, leading to higher population densities in cities. This urban shift can result in more frequent human-wildlife interactions and challenges in wildlife management.

Health and Disease Concerns

Changes in climate and habitat can influence the health of small mammal populations. For instance, skunks and raccoons are known reservoirs for various viruses, including rabies and canine distemper. Environmental stressors and increased urbanization may exacerbate the spread of these diseases, posing risks to other wildlife and human health.

In summary, the current climate crisis is affecting small mammals in North America through changes in physical characteristics, distribution patterns, and population dynamics. These shifts have broader ecological implications, influencing biodiversity and ecosystem health.

A SCIENCE NOTE

Several parasites can influence human mental health, leading to symptoms that may be perceived as “going crazy.” Notable examples include:

Toxoplasma gondii: This protozoan parasite infects about one-third of the global population. While often asymptomatic, it has been linked to various psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and intermittent explosive disorder. Research suggests that T. gondii can alter brain chemistry, potentially contributing to these conditions.

Trypanosoma brucei: Responsible for African trypanosomiasis, or “sleeping sickness,” this parasite is transmitted by tsetse flies in sub-Saharan Africa. Early symptoms include fever and headaches, but as the infection progresses, it can invade the central nervous system, leading to neurological and psychiatric manifestations such as confusion, personality changes, and psychosis. Without treatment, the disease is often fatal.

Taenia solium: The pork tapeworm can cause neurocysticercosis when its larvae infect the human central nervous system. This condition is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide and can also result in cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, and psychosis.

It’s important to note that while these parasites can have profound effects on mental health, such cases are relatively rare. Maintaining good hygiene practices, such as proper handwashing, cooking meat thoroughly, and avoiding areas known for specific parasitic diseases, can help reduce the risk of infection.

If someone exhibits sudden or unexplained psychiatric symptoms, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation to determine the underlying cause.

A SCIENCE NOTE

The Role of Lead Poisoning in Cognitive Decline and Societal Dysfunction

An interesting response to this post raised an important question: Could lead poisoning be playing a role in the observed decline in critical thinking, reasoning ability, and social responsibility? Is lead contamination—particularly in drinking water—a contributing factor?

Lead Exposure and Cognitive Impairment

Lead is a neurotoxin with well-documented effects on brain function, particularly in children. Even low levels of exposure can result in reduced IQ, impaired executive function, increased impulsivity, and diminished problem-solving skills. Chronic exposure can also lead to antisocial behavior, aggression, and an increased likelihood of engaging in criminal activity. Studies have linked elevated lead levels in communities to higher rates of violence and lower educational outcomes.

Is Lead in the Water?

The question of lead exposure is particularly relevant given the ongoing crises in cities such as Flint, Michigan, where lead-contaminated water poisoned an entire generation. Many older U.S. cities still have aging lead service lines, and poorly maintained water infrastructure increases the risk of lead leaching into drinking supplies. In some rural and suburban areas, lead exposure may come from well water, industrial pollution, or legacy contamination from lead-based paint and gasoline.

A Political and Social Implication

Could widespread lead exposure be contributing to the lack of logical reasoning, the embrace of conspiracy theories, and the general decline in civic literacy? Research suggests that populations with high lead exposure exhibit reduced capacity for delayed gratification, increased emotional volatility, and lower impulse control—all traits that align with the behavior observed in certain political demographics. This could partially explain why some individuals struggle with scientific reasoning, economic literacy, and fact-based decision-making.

The Need for Investigation

This hypothesis warrants further research. Systematic testing of water supplies, blood lead levels, and cognitive function across different demographic and geographic groups could provide valuable insights. If lead poisoning is indeed a factor, addressing it could have profound implications for education, public health, and political discourse.

Final Thoughts

While lead exposure alone may not fully explain the rise of misinformation, anti-intellectualism, and reactionary politics, it is a potential silent contributor that deserves serious attention. Solving the issue of lead contamination may be a key step in improving societal decision-making, reducing aggression, and fostering a more rational, informed electorate.

A SCIENCE NOTE
When leaves turn upside down, it often signals that rain or a storm is approaching. Many broadleaf trees, like maple or poplar, have leaves with flexible stems that respond to changes in humidity and air pressure. As the humidity rises before a storm, the leaf stems soften, causing the leaves to flip over and expose their lighter, underside surfaces.

This phenomenon is a natural weather predictor, as it typically happens when the atmosphere becomes more unstable, indicating an incoming weather system. While not always 100% accurate, it can be a useful sign of changing weather, especially when combined with other clues like increased wind, darkening skies, or a drop in temperature.

The possible benefits of this phenomenon include:

  1. Water Conservation – The undersides of many leaves have fewer stomata (tiny openings that regulate water loss). By flipping, the tree may reduce water loss before a rainstorm.
  2. Stronger Wind Resistance – Flipping leaves might help trees reduce wind resistance, lowering the risk of damage during storms.
  3. Efficient Rain Capture – Some researchers suggest that exposing the underside of leaves helps trees collect rainwater more effectively.

While the exact evolutionary advantage is still debated, the flipping effect serves as a natural weather indicator and could provide subtle survival benefits to trees.

A SCIENCE NOTE
When you hear crows and blue jays screeching and diving in the air, it usually means they are mobbing a predator. Both species are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their space from threats such as hawks, owls, eagles, or even ground predators like foxes or cats.

Blue jays and crows are known for their intelligence and strong alarm calls, often alerting other birds and animals to danger. If they are making a lot of noise and swooping down repeatedly, there’s a good chance a predator is nearby—sometimes even a snake or raccoon in a tree.

If you observe this behavior, look around, and you may spot the intruder they’re trying to drive away!

Out of season
Makes me frown
Knowing reason

[Bridge]
Sawdust-like frass
(You bet your ass)
Exposing your roots
(Are in cahoots)

[Chorus]
The fall comes
(Not the season)
Falling leaves
(what’s the reason)
The fall of man
Is at hand

[Verse 2]
Sparse foliage
Thinning canopy
Vast spoilage
Easy to see

[Bridge]
Sawdust-like frass
(You bet your ass)
Exposing your roots
(Are in cahoots)

[Chorus]
The fall comes
(Not the season)
Falling leaves
(what’s the reason)
The fall of man
Is at hand

[Outro]
Falling leaves
(Man leaves… falling)

A SCIENCE NOTE
here are several signs that a tree is starting to die. Here are some key indicators:

Foliage Issues

  • Leaves turning brown or yellow out of season – If a tree’s leaves change color too early or fail to grow in the spring, it could be a sign of distress.
  • Sparse or no foliage – A thinning canopy, fewer leaves than usual, or bare branches can indicate a problem.
  • Wilting or scorched leaves – Leaves that look wilted, curled, or scorched at the edges could signal root damage or disease.

Branch and Bark Problems

  • Brittle or dead branches – Dead branches snap easily and lack flexibility. If many branches are dead, the tree is in decline.
  • Peeling, cracked, or missing bark – Healthy trees have firm, intact bark. Peeling or large cracks may indicate disease, infestation, or internal decay.
  • Fungal growth – Mushrooms or fungal conks at the base or on the trunk suggest internal rot.

Trunk and Root Concerns

  • Leaning tree – A sudden lean can indicate root damage or instability, making the tree a hazard.
  • Hollow or decaying trunk – If you tap the trunk and it sounds hollow, the tree may be rotting from the inside.
  • Exposed or damaged roots – If roots are damaged, severed, or surrounded by excessive soil erosion, the tree may struggle to absorb water and nutrients.

Pests and Disease

  • Insect infestations – Borer holes, sawdust-like frass, or excessive ant activity can mean the tree is being eaten from within.
  • Oozing sap or wet patches – Unusual sap leaks or dark, wet spots on the trunk can indicate infection.

If a tree is showing multiple signs of decline, it’s best to consult an arborist to determine whether it can be saved or needs removal.

A SCIENCE NOTE: Violent Rain
Multiple factors figure into the physics of violent rain. The starting point is the moisture content of air. The Earth is warming. Warm air can physically hold more water than cool air. The warmer the air the more water vapor the air can hold (i.e. relative humidity). The capacity doubles for every ten degree Celsius warming.

One physical result is more massive raindrops. The Momentum of Rain is p = mv (p = momentum, m = mass, v = velocity.) Part of the increasing momentum is transferred to the sides and upward increasing wind turbulence, as well as updrafts. Most of the momentum is transferred upon impact. You may notice the rain bouncing higher off the streets and sidewalks. Flowing rainwater will have both increased mass and velocity.

So, don’t be dazed
(Nor confused)
For days and days
(In many ways)
Hypnotized
(Mesmerized)
By the rhetoric
(Listen to the music)

[Verse]
Chaotic systems are complex, (dynamic, and often nonlinear.)
While they may appear disordered, (they follow deterministic rules)
… that make their behavior sensitive (sensitive) to initial conditions,
… leading to seemingly unpredictable outcomes.
But, don’t be dazed
(Nor confused)
By the rhetoric
(To the thick of it)

[Bridge]
(Know!) No, don’t be dazed
(Nor confused)
[Instrumental, Guitar Solo]
Hypnotized
(Mesmerized)
By the rhetoric
(Listen to the music)

[Chorus]
Quick!
(Listen!) Listen to the music
Let’s suggest
Chaos (at it’s best)
Let’s digest
Chaos (at it’s best)

Quick!
(Listen!) Listen to the music

A SCIENCE NOTE
What unites those supporting The Antichrist is a mindset of “me first” — a relentless focus on self-interest above all else. This pervasive narcissism fuels an unwillingness to engage with facts, think critically, or consider the broader consequences of their actions. Another glaring trait is an aversion to complexity. They struggle with abstract thought, particularly when it comes to science, mathematics, and logical reasoning. This inability to process nuanced information makes them easy targets for manipulation, whether through political propaganda, conspiracy theories, or simplistic, fear-driven rhetoric.
