Writing the song Oh! Susanna Part 2
Writing the song Oh! Susanna Part 2

LYRICS
It rained all night the day I left
The it was dry
And, we all go marching
Down into the ground
To get out of the rain

When January feels like June
Wake up! Wake up! And, none too soon
And we all go searching
Everywhere all around
To get our of the rain

Oh! Susanna
Won’t you cry for me
Oh! Susanna
All can surely see
Oh! Susanna
It’s a tragedy

Oh! Susanna Part 2.mp3

ABOUT THE SONG
Chords — Capo 1
C Am
G Am

Written and recorded on January 12, 2013 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania as a digital, 4-track stereo, extemporaneous recording. After posting this status on Facebook, the song was written and recorded on the streets: “Hmmm… 60 degrees in January… perfect day to take music to the streets… maybe write a global warming song?”

It started while I was sleeping… I heard a news report about severe weather being the new normal. Then, I started hearing a mix of the Stephen Foster song Oh! Susanna and the children’s version of Johnny Comes Marching Home known as The Ants Go Marching (and a dash if You Are My Sunshine)… kind-of tossing traditional irony with a modern day twist.

LYRICS
Sitting on the bed
Looking out the window
Shaking of my head
Blocking out the shadow

When I was a child it use to snow
Since then, man went wild
Now, you never know

Standing with the keys
Pining out the window
Opportunity to seize
Singing to the snow
Where did you go?

We know
What we did to you, Snow
Please last
Please forgive us
For we know what we’ve done
First is last is first is last

Please forgive us,
Quasi-civilization Of The Dumb

Written and recorded December 29, 2012 in Chester County, Pennsylvania as an extemporaneous, 1-track, stereo, digital recording. It started snowing today, and it made me long for days gone. So, I thought I’d write a song for part of our Human Induced Climate Change Experiment and an article entitled Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover is Retreating. (Also see: Record Warming)

LYRICS
The people go marching one by one
Hoorah, hooray
The people go marching one by one
To get out of the sun
They better run

The people go marching two by two
I don’t know… is that you?
That’s me, too
We better run
One by one

The people go marching three by three
The last one stops to see if he can see
The blue sky one more time
And, I’m…
… I’m wishing so too
How about you?

The people go marching four by four
Please don’t forget to shut the door
’cause we don’t know how much more
Hoorah, hooray
It’s man’s last day
He better run
One by one

The people go marching five by five
Better hurry to take the dive
If you want to stay alive
Hoorah, hooray
Could be our final day
We better run
One by one
Before we become undone

The people are marching one by one
For their last hoorah… hooray!

Hooray, hooray… the people are on their way
Perhaps now we can save the day

LYRICS
Is there nothing I can do to persuade you
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

You might turn off a light
Helping clear clutter from sight
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

You might put up a fight
To when it comes to doing what’s right
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

Though trite… turn off a light
Helping clear-up a blight
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

Depend upon us. Stupendous!

LYRICS
Never been in this place before
So close to the edge
The outcome… unsure
Never been in this space before
So close to the judge
The vision a blur

What the hell are we doing
Pollution
Suing
De-evolution pursuing
Solution avoidance
Despite evidence
Wipe-out existence

The minds that shine will shine, shine, shine
But
Never been to this place
To history trace
The accumulation of the humanization blunders
Then… as one… wonders
What the hell are we doing
Pollution
Suing
De-evolution pursuing
Solution avoidance
Despite evidence
Wipe-out existence

Please… don’t wipe-out existence

Though it was unintended, the music ended up being inspired by the Kinks’ David Watts. The idea is kind-of like David Watts, too… I wish I could be like David Watts. I wish I could be smart enough… to get through to the people… that don’t care about other people. What the hell are we doing?
.
Written and recorded on October 1, 2012 at Marsh Creek State Park and other locations in Chester County, Pennsylvania… on an 8-track digital recorder. 2 tracks as stereo guitar (first with no effects, then effects followed by Capo 2 with effects). 2 tracks as stereo vocals. 1 backing vocal with a bullhorn effect. 1 backing vocal with Darth Vader effect. The six tracks were mixed down onto the remaining 2 tracks.

LYRICS
How can we achieve flight
if we hold on too tight
The trick is getting to know
When to let go

When there’s not a human to be found
The world will still be spinning round
When there’s not a sole left in sight
Nature’s there to nurture curve

Don’t be made a fool. Make a sound.
Let those fools all be hellbound
There’s still you and me to set things right
Nature’s there to nurture. We’re sure.

Would you be remiss… speechless?

ABOUT THE SONG

A / D

Written and recorded on July 24, 2012 at Marsh Creek State Park, Chester County, Pennsylvania. For quite sometime, I have been conducting a study on deforestation of the Earth. While writing the song, I noticed the sun shining through the leaves of the tree… like is was winter time; however, it is summer. Then, a couple of small children walked up to me and said, “Thank you guitar man.” What would the world be like without trees? What would the world be like without the innocence of children?

Writing Music During a Heat Wave

LYRICS
chorus:
I’m melting, melting, melting
Literally, melting
My skin is smoldering
My eyes are dry
I’m melting

how much can a human endure
We’re about to find out
(That’s for sure)

If your lips aren’t too dry
Can you shout it out?
(Come on. Give it a try)

Human induced climate change
An experiment
in our ability
(in our “are” ability)
To re-arrange

Restore
The natural order

Neutral nature
The Balancing Queen
Neutral nature
Is never mean

If you were seeing
What the pollution is doing
You’d quit that habit

If you were aware
Of what’s in your air
You’d stop breathing

Lance the invincible
Tackle the impossible

The most I’ve ever seen Spring
Look like fall
When birth is death
It can’t be good at all

The perplexing thing
We can’t crawl
Let alone baby steps

As we clone and postpone
Rippin’ our lungs out
With ozone

While we raged
God wept
Our conscious slept
We’re the ones… that should have been caged

The song was motivated by the color of the landscape. Instead of the trees looking like they were coming to life in the springtime, they appeared to be dying as if it were fall.

The Gummi Bears are at a loss for words
But, they’d like to convey a message if they may?
They’re picking up swords

As we melt them, a lass,
They’re forming a mass (a giant mass)
Giant Gummi Bear goo
They’ll be rolling over you

Goo from every orifice
Goo from every pore
Gummi Bear all over you face
Gummi Bear, ’till you’re chokin’, “No more!”

LYRICS
Lookout for the fallout from the fallout
Bits and pieces falling to the ground
Drips and drabs spilling all about
Killed all the pity in humanity

When we drop a bomb, it won’t be long
’till that butterfly’s wings brings these things
Back near me via the chaos theory

Lookout for the fallout from the fallout
Expectations falling all around
Drips and drabs splattered all about
Filling every nook and cranny of insanity

As the fallout rains down
Our river banks overflow
Causing fallout from our fallout
Now, our disaster chain reaction
Has spiraled out-of-control
Shifting Mother Nature’s position from neutral
Shedding her princess gown
For the garb of the undertaker
We don’t want to come to know
The consequence of our devastation
