The Star of Bethlehem, or Christmas Star, appears only in the nativity story of the Gospel of Matthew, where “wise men from the East” are inspired by the star to travel to Jerusalem. “For we have seen His star in the East [or at its rising] and have come to worship Him.”

There they meet King Herod of Judea, and tell him they are heading to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn king of the Jews. Herod calls his scribes and priests who confirm to him that a verse from the Book of Micah interpreted as a prophecy, states that the Jewish Messiah would be born in Bethlehem to the south of Jerusalem.
