[Intro]
Riddle:
Saddle or saddled?
(Back in or burdened?)

[Verse 1]
Woke up this morning
Had to decide
Should I heed warning
Or ride on and die

[Chorus]
Riddle:
Saddle or saddled?
(Back in or burdened?)
’cause I’m back in the saddle (again)
Begin!

[Bridge]
(Tossing excess baggage)
Oops, there goes a trunk
(Who would’a thunk)
Glossing nemesis’ age
(Oops, there goes your case)
Smack dab in the face

[Verse 2]
Woke up this morning
My lucky day
Bleeded… then heeded the warning
Lived another day… to see another way

[Chorus]
Riddle:
Saddle or saddled?
(Back in or burdened?)
’cause I’m back in the saddle (again)
Begin!

[Bridge]
(Tossing excess baggage)
Oops, there goes a trunk

[Outro]
(Tossing excess baggage)
Oops, there goes a ton of gold
(Humanity’s soul sold)
Glossing Nemesis’ Age
(Hubris has left the stage)
Me? I’m baggage free
(Living life happily)
And, I hope you, too

ABOUT THE SONG
The Roud Folk Song Index is a database of around 250,000 references to nearly 25,000 songs collected from oral tradition in the English language from all over the world. The primary function of the Roud Folk Song Index is as a research aid correlating versions of traditional English-language folk song lyrics independently documented over past centuries by many different collectors across (especially) the UK and North America. It is possible by searching the database—for example by title, first line(s), or subject matter (or a combination of any of a dozen fields)—to locate many of the variants of a particular song. Comprehensive details of those songs are then available, including details of the original collected source, and a reference to where to find the text (and possibly music) of the song within a published volume in the EFDSS archive.

From the “Aardvark” sessions. Found only on the Unplugged Underground Vol. XXV collection.

ABOUT THE SONG
Electric eels don’t just swim — they illuminate. Their bodies are wired with thousands of electrocytes stacked in series, each one a spark waiting to fire. When a nerve signal flips the switch, these cells release their charge in perfect unison, summing their potentials into a jolt strong enough to light the dark and still the waters. Head to tail, positive to negative, the eel becomes a “living battery,” bending the current of nature itself.

In F Eel, that same principle becomes a metaphor for love. We are wired with the same potential — charged when we connect, luminous when we give, unstoppable when we unite. Like the eel’s electric field that surrounds and transforms everything near it, our love can ripple out, shockingly powerful, illuminating the path toward freedom, insight, and tranquility.

Turn it on. Feel it. Be the light.

ABOUT THE SONG
The song is a metaphor for social responsibility.

“Swab the poop deck” means to mop the highest, rearmost deck of a ship. This instruction was given to keep the wooden deck damp to prevent it from drying out, rotting, and becoming a fire hazard, especially around gunpowder. It also served to clean away salt and seaweed from the deck and keep the crew occupied on long voyages.

Why was the poop deck swabbed?
Preventing fire: In an era of cannons and gunpowder, a damp deck could reduce the risk of fire.
Preserving the wood: Keeping the wooden planks moist helped them to swell, which sealed the seams and prevented water from seeping into the lower decks. It also helped to prevent the wood from drying out and becoming brittle.
Fighting fungus: Saltwater helps to prevent fungus and mold from growing on the wooden planks.
Cleaning: Regular swabbing cleaned away dried salt, dirt, and seaweed that collected on the deck.
Discipline and boredom: On long voyages, swabbing the deck was a task that kept sailors busy and prevented idleness and boredom.
