About Four Dimensional Music and Chaos Theory

These comments were made about the above discussion:

Ed called… and left a message (he has experience with the dead, is a member of the Family):
He has already attempted to contacted with “the bear” on other matters… and this type of music sounds like it is right up his alley.

He suggests we should also try to get with the bear, too.

I ask, “the bear is the grateful dead sound guy that kind-of invented the modern PA? right?”

Wally added:
His real name – Owsley Stanley
but yes, helped conceive and implement the the dead’s early sound and the infamous “wall of sound” (’74-’76)
75 tons of equipment

Eric chimed in:
I’m going to research information about the the specific musical note of Bb (B flat).
It is of great significance. Exploding stars, musical waves, groovey.

Peter replied:
Numbers and beats–which also affect pitch, but ultimately it is rhythm. the area of four dimensional music must manifest in rhythm as it relates to time. pitch is just a quality of rhythm. the act of a phenomenon in space time and finding a new paradigm in space time, that is the area to attack! computers can help, but it is better to apply this to live experience.

Peter wrote to us: Hello. I am a composer and I have been obsessed with four dimensional music recently. I don’t know what it is, even though it is a recurring idea. I have been reading a lot and have discovered that the world of fractals and chaos seem to have a definite relationship to four D. I am not a computer programmer, so I would not be applying this to a program but am interested in applying it to acoustic works.

WE REPLIED:
Dear Peter,
OK. Let’s see what we can do.
How would you like to get started?
Sincerely,
Daniel

PETER REPLIED:
How to translate irrational numbers into a tangible working time signature — like Pi or Cantor Dust.

SIDD OFFERED:
Take the digits of pi and set them to tune, using the numbers for chord progressions?

WE ASK:
Anyone have ideas?

PART 2

rick (guitar, vocals, sound engineering) replied:
Beyond my ability to compute, but interested in the outcome…..I have trouble just keeping 6 strings in tune

krishna (guitar, percussion, computer engineering) replied:
One interesting feature of fractals is the self similarity at various length scales.
Of course the length scales aren’t simple multiple or rationally related  with each other which is what makes it fractal.
Not sure how one would play that without a computer.
I have a hard enough time staying with a band playing a regular meter :-0

chris asked:
Is this what you and Eric were working on?

I responded:
Yes. Here are a couple examples —

Dan, I gave your info. to Tumaini Johnson. Maybe you can explain your knowledge and insight on 4 dimensional and chaos theory to combine the two into music. I think it’s chaos systems within
a chaos system that can be duplicated into math sequences delivered through sound and visual effects??? cc me i would like to learn… and tumaini im sure will have a good canvas to create his own ideas.

I’m a friend of Francisco Baiz he told me about your work with dimensional audio and some experimenting with algorithms and the sorts. I’m a music producer and audio engineer so this type of stuff got my attention. Francisco said that you would be able to explain exactly what 4D music is and its future applications to me, I’m very curious.
Thanks

i try to explain:
About 4D Music and Chaos Theory Experiment
The experiment with four dimensional music and chaos theory started in the 1990’s. The word music may not be the best way to describe the experience; for now, since I do not know a word for this design invention, I will call it four dimensional music.

The experiment has evolved into solving the following design problem(s):
If you were to go on a real, real, real long roadtrip… such as in a spaceship traveling at a speed approaching that of light, what music would you take with you?

Because many of the people involved in the experiment are also musicians, we added the requirement that the design should allow for “live music” and the ability to see a concert.

The closest example of the concept that I can think of is helping a deaf person hear music.

I think the movie was called “Mr. Holland’s Opus” — the movie about Glenn Holland, a musician and composer who wants his deaf son to hear his music?

MP3 Download Information and Lyrics

ABOUT THE SONG
How can a songwriter go about writing a Christmas song without coming off as bogus? Sincerity is a crucial element. After all, why write a Christmas song? What is the purpose?

If the purpose is to spread the message, even if it is only touches one other person, it would appear to be a valid song. In fact, why not write it for Jesus to sing?

This song embodies these concepts. In addition, it was written because “I wanted to hear a different Christmas song.” I wanted a new song that I could listen to over and over again without getting sick of hearing it. Since I could not find an existing song, I had to write a new one. Though I don’t consider myself a gifted or talented, I can scribe inspiration that comes from above.

The End Of The End is a concept album.

The Opening Scene as an .MP3

Following are some influences and ideas:

Daniel 12
The End Times
1 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.
2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.

Revelations Chapter 12
12:1 A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
12:2 She was with child. She cried out in pain, laboring to give birth.
12:3 Another sign was seen in heaven. Behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven crowns.
12:4 His tail drew one third of the stars of the sky, and threw them to the earth. The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.
12:5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. Her child was caught up to God, and to his throne.
12:6 The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days.
12:7 There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war.
12:8 They didn’t prevail, neither was a place found for him any more in heaven.
12:9 The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
12:10 I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now is come the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night.

12:11 They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death.

12:12 Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil has gone down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time.”

12:13 When the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.

12:14 Two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, so that she might be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

12:15 The serpent spewed water out of his mouth after the woman like a river, that he might cause her to be carried away by the stream.

12:16 The earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon spewed out of his mouth.

12:17 The dragon grew angry with the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep God’s commandments and hold Jesus’ testimony.

From Forbidding or Friendly Grim Reaper Tattoos —
“Grim Reaper tattoos first gained a foothold in the Americas in 18th century Mexico and Argentina, where poor criminals adopted them as totems to ward off capture by the police. Mexican Grim Reaper tattoos, surprisingly, depict the Reaper as a female; but even more surprisingly, in both the Mexican and Argentinean cultures, the Grim Reaper is regarded as a saint, “La Santisima Muerte” in Mexico and “San La Muerte” in Argentina.”

From ABC News’ Will the World End in 2012?
“You have to understand, there will be nothing, nothing left,” Geryl told ABC News from his home in Antwerp, Belgium. “We will have to start an entire civilization from scratch.”

But for all the hype, there is little evidence the ancient Maya ever intended for the end of their calendar to be read as a portent for disaster.

“These prophecies of doom really don’t have any basis in what we know about the Maya,” said Stephen Houston, a professor of anthropology at Brown University and a specialist of Maya hieroglyphic writing. “The Maya descriptions barely talk about this event.”

Instead, Houston said, the Maya saw their “long count” — the longest of their cyclical calendars — coming to an end in 2012 but also beginning anew on that date, without disastrous consequences.
