Songwriting Extremes

LYRICS
Going, going, going to extremes

One minute it’s hot
The next it’s not

Going, going, going to extremes

One day it snows
The next… who knows

Going, going, going to extremes

It’s not whether there’s gonna be weather
It’s whether we’ll weather the weather

Going, going, going to extremes

After floods dry out
No doubt a drought

Going, going, going to extremes

What do you know
There goes a tornado

Going, going, going to extremes

Some sort of insane
Hurricane

Going, going, going to extremes

Hell, is that hail?
My head’s too frail

Pretty soon a foreign typhoon
Rain of monsoon

Going, going, going to extremes

The answer’s blowin’ in the wind

LYRICS
It sucks when you’re living in a swamp
Yet, it seems that’s what we want
When confronted with the taste of our waste
We throw a fit over our own shit
And cry, and rant, and stomp

More coal and oil until we spoil
Yes, it seems that’s what we want
When confronted with the wast of our taste
We recoil and start to boil

Blowin’ methane and monoxides sky high
Patience of the temperate… we try

Sucks livin’ in a swamp

bookmark_borderOwn Worst Enemy

A song inspired by a friend’s Facebook post:

So, 88-98% of corn, cotton (cotton oil–as in what a lot of potato chips are cooked in), canola oil, and soybean crops grown are genetically engineered. About 80% of the crops are to feed livestock. So what evolution has taken 3 billion years to create, humankind can destroy in 40 years. Maybe that’s the plan, to kill off our own kind to revert back to the beginning, with a little plastic and holes in the ozone as a special bonus. Kudos, Homo sapiens. We’ve really “outdone” ourselves.

LYRICS
What is it that I walk upon?
I wish we had the insight to look on and on and on
And, we found the ground
Underneath our feet
Are we going to be our own defeat?

What is that that I breath
Has the air gone up in thin air
Is there something more than just our air in there
What is it we breath
Are we our own disease?

Will we beat
Into defeat
Will we beat
Our own defeat

What is that in our food
Is it any good
What we eat
Are we our own defeat?

I don’t think we can cheat Mother Nature
It’s us we beat into defeat

We’re going to beat ourselves into defeat
And, I would say it’s time to change the seat
This game of musical chairs is going nowhere
I don’t want to be the last one standing
It won’t be any fun if I’m the only one that does remain
It might even drive you insane

LYRICS
It rained all night the day I left
The it was dry
And, we all go marching
Down into the ground
To get out of the rain

When January feels like June
Wake up! Wake up! And, none too soon
And we all go searching
Everywhere all around
To get our of the rain

Oh! Susanna
Won’t you cry for me
Oh! Susanna
All can surely see
Oh! Susanna
It’s a tragedy

Oh! Susanna Part 2.mp3

ABOUT THE SONG
Chords — Capo 1
C Am
G Am

Written and recorded on January 12, 2013 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania as a digital, 4-track stereo, extemporaneous recording. After posting this status on Facebook, the song was written and recorded on the streets: “Hmmm… 60 degrees in January… perfect day to take music to the streets… maybe write a global warming song?”

It started while I was sleeping… I heard a news report about severe weather being the new normal. Then, I started hearing a mix of the Stephen Foster song Oh! Susanna and the children’s version of Johnny Comes Marching Home known as The Ants Go Marching (and a dash if You Are My Sunshine)… kind-of tossing traditional irony with a modern day twist.

LYRICS
Sitting on the bed
Looking out the window
Shaking of my head
Blocking out the shadow

When I was a child it use to snow
Since then, man went wild
Now, you never know

Standing with the keys
Pining out the window
Opportunity to seize
Singing to the snow
Where did you go?

We know
What we did to you, Snow
Please last
Please forgive us
For we know what we’ve done
First is last is first is last

Please forgive us,

Is there nothing I can do to persuade you
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

You might turn off a light
Helping clear clutter from sight
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

You might put up a fight
To when it comes to doing what’s right
There’s somethings that we can do
That will save us. Stupendous!

Helping clear-up a blight

LYRICS
Never been in this place before
So close to the edge
The outcome… unsure
Never been in this space before
So close to the judge
The vision a blur

What the hell are we doing
Pollution
Suing
De-evolution pursuing
Solution avoidance
Despite evidence
Wipe-out existence

The minds that shine will shine, shine, shine
But
Never been to this place
To history trace
The accumulation of the humanization blunders
Then… as one… wonders
What the hell are we doing
Pollution
Suing
De-evolution pursuing
Solution avoidance
Despite evidence
Wipe-out existence

Please… don’t wipe-out existence

Though it was unintended, the music ended up being inspired by the Kinks’ David Watts. The idea is kind-of like David Watts, too… I wish I could be like David Watts. I wish I could be smart enough… to get through to the people… that don’t care about other people. What the hell are we doing?

LYRICS
Once upon a time the West was wild
The impact of man having been mild
It’s been quite a while
Since there’s been a wolf’s howl

Now, the West isn’t the same (no, no more)
The Western man made it lame
“Of course, you’d better shoot that horse!”

Amazing
Should of stuck to gazing not grazing, hazing, razing, phasing, tasing
’till every red man is a dead man
Burning the planet of its plants
Stripped the mines as if they’re yours
Who knows if life endures
